CCKI–GW was created to celebrate January 13, 2003, the centennial of Korean immigration and to engage in other educational and cultural activities. It was incorporated on October 30, 2001 by founding member Mark Keam. CCKI-GW was granted federal tax-exempt status under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) in June 2003.

In 2001, CCKI-GW founding member Harold Pyon worked with Virginia’s U.S. Senator George Allen and U.S. Representative Tom Davis to pass resolutions through Congress to commemorate the centennial. Eventually, CCKI–GW members became interested in establishing a Korean American Day that could be celebrated annually. The committee and one of its founders, Sekwon Chong, motivated the work to designate an annual Korean American Day by congressional resolution. In December 2004, CCKI–GW filed amendments with the Internal Revenue Service and the Commonwealth of Virginia to change its name to KAF-GW. The revised mission of the renewed organization included the goal of establishing an annual Korean American Day.

Harold Pyon led the effort by requesting Senator Allen’s and Representative Davis’ support for establishing an official annual Korean American Day. They were very receptive to the idea, and began their work on passing House and Senate resolutions. Harold worked with Paul Unger on Senator Allen’s staff to prepare the resolution. Mark Keam, who worked for Illinois’ Senator Dick Durbin, recommended his co-sponsorship and helped to navigate the legislative process. On December 16, 2005, the United States Senate passed Senate Resolution 283 of the 109th Congress, recognizing January 13 as Korean American Day.

On December 13, 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives passed House Resolution 487 of the 109th Congress, recognizing January 13 as Korean American Day. The lead sponsor of the House version was Representative Tom Davis. New York’s Representative Charlie Rangel served as lead co-sponsor. Many other Senators and Representatives and their staffs, as well as numerous Korean American community leaders and organizations worked cooperatively in a bi-partisan effort led by Representative Tom Davis and Senator George Allen to pass these historic resolutions. This was the first time that Congress had officially recognized the history and contribution of an entire ethnic group of immigrants to America.

Beginning in 2006, KAF-GW celebrated January 13th of each year as Korean American Day to memorialize more than a century of Korean Americans’ journey to the United States. Former Senator George Allen and Former Representative Tom Davis received the Guanghwa Award from the government of the Republic of Korea for their outstanding leadership in support of the Korean American Day resolutions. Former Senator Allen received the award when he visited South Korea in 2009. Former Representative Davis received the award in 2008 at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the USA. On November 3, 2023, KAF-GW received the Korean Presidential Merit Award from President Yoon Suk Yeol for its contributions.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||3px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Note: Mark Keam and Harold Pyon contributed valuable details to this brief history.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3,1_3,1_3″ use_custom_gutter=”on” gutter_width=”1″ make_equal=”on” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”1500px” module_alignment=”center” custom_margin=”1px|11px||-22px|false|false” custom_padding=”3px||10px|0px|false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://kafgw.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Congress.jpg” title_text=”Congress” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”100%” module_alignment=”left” min_height=”100%” height=”100%” max_height=”1000px” custom_margin=”|177px|-21px||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://kafgw.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/President-award_2023.10.5-3.jpg” title_text=”President award_2023.10.5 3″ align=”center” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”80%” custom_padding=”||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://kafgw.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Presidential-Merit-Award-2.jpg” title_text=”Presidential Merit Award 2″ force_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”|||1px||” custom_padding=”|||0px||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

On December 13, 2005, the House of Representatives of the United States passed House Resolution 487 of the 109th Congress. Greater Washington !!

My journey of 37 years as a first generation immigrant has been an experience full of challenges and opportunities. I have learned to keep two thoughts close in my heart:

First, I always appreciate and have great respect for our predecessors. Their lives were in many cases very difficult. Their sacrifices and hard work have created for us a unique history of Korean American immigration for which we may be proud. They have also helped to provide the foundation for us to build successful lives in American society. I believe it is our duty to those early immigrants and to our current and future generations to pass on the cherished values and traditions of our immigrant forebears.

Second, I believe that all of us are private diplomats who represent the Korean American community within the greater American society. We must set a good example so that all Americans will look upon us as upstanding, hard working citizens. Doing this will also affect how Americans view the Republic of Korea and will ultimately help to maintain and strengthen the relationship between the Republic of Korea and the United States.

Year 2023 will mark the 120th anniversary of the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to the United States. I am so excited that our steering committee has prepared for 2023 Korean American Day to celebrate with all generations and all communities together.

As President of the Korean American Foundation – Greater Washington, it is my responsibility to insure that our organization works to preserve the memory of our immigration history and promotes that history as worthy of study and of respect. I am determined to succeed in that effort.

Thank you very much.

Rosa Park

10th President

November 28, 2022

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding=”90px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_code][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Formal Presidents” module_id=”tab5″ module_class=”tab-content” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”3em||||false|false” custom_padding=”0px||5em||false|false” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_5,3_5,1_5″ use_custom_gutter=”on” gutter_width=”2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://kafgw.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/3-Sekwon-Kenneth-Chong-2017.-4-1.png” title_text=”3-Sekwon Kenneth Chong 2017. 4 (1)” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”3_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”21px” custom_padding=”0.8em||0.8em||false|false” border_width_top=”1px” border_color_top=”#e02b20″ border_width_bottom=”1px” border_color_bottom=”#e02b20″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

Sekwon Chong Senior Advisor | 1st / 2nd / 3rd President

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”Noto Sans KR|300|||||||” text_font_size=”17px” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]Sekwon Kenneth Chong was born in Pohang, Korea, has received the Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Law and Economics, Konkuk University in Seoul and has completed the Educational Administration, Graduate School of Education, the Korea University in Seoul, Korea.
